Studio

We arrive before we draw.

Nordvik Studio is a small architecture practice working where the landscape is as much the client as the people who will live there. We take on a few buildings at a time and stay with each one from the first walk on site to the first winter after it is finished.

A site survey drawn in hairlines: contour lines around two hills, a coastline to the north, a dashed walking route and a small building footprint on the lower hill.
A site survey, contours at two metres. Every project starts as a walk, drawn.

IApproachThree rules

01

Visit first

Before any drawing, we spend time on the site in more than one season: where the wind comes from, where snow collects, where the light lands at four in the afternoon in November.

02

One material, fully

Each building is made mostly of one thing — concrete cast against boards, charred larch, stone from the site — so it weathers as one piece and reads as one form from a distance.

03

Frame, don’t compete

Windows are placed for a view, not for a facade. From outside, the buildings are quiet. From inside, they are about what is outside.

IIHow we workFive steps

  1. 1

    Site

Walks, a measured survey and a season of notes before a single line is drawn.

Your partWalk it with us at least once.

  2. 2

    Sketch

Hand drawings and timber models at 1:200, made on site where we can.

Your partTell us how you want to live, not what you want it to look like.

  3. 3

    Drawings

Permits first, then details at 1:20 — every junction drawn before it is built.

Your partDecide once, early. Changes on paper are cheap.

  4. 4

    Build

With local builders who know the weather. We are on site every week.

Your partVisit when you like; we will walk you round.

  5. 5

    Return

We come back after the first winter and fix whatever the weather found.

Your partTell us what the winter taught you.

IIIContactOne form

Tell us about the place.

Where it is, how you reach it, and what you would like to build there. A rough location and a few lines are enough to start.

Roughly where, what is there now, what you have in mind.

Concept site: the form checks what you type, but nothing is sent or stored.
